If you want something a little easier less arduous and gives you the ability to do a larger amount of laundry then consider a Dasher washer. Most of the insides of these are made with some type of tin sheeting, but I imagine you could cut apart like a 50 or 55 gallon plastic drum to use the inside or just make it plain me out of Wood. Instead of using a rod for the handle or a piece of pipe that may otherwise melt in the cataclysm considered using a PVC pipe with a wooden dowel shove down into it. And as far as attaching all of this various parts and pieces of wood together, one could use a very strong glue instead of nails, or you could also use a combination of glue and wooden dowels or pegs to construct the washer. Here are a couple of videos that show you the method and use of these wonderful Off Grid washing machines.
