When I was studying EE at Iowa State, we got to take a trip to tour this facility when it was still in operation. This included walking along the yellow tape around the core and the most memorable thing, getting to look down into the spent fuel rod pool and seeing the Cherenkov Radiation - the blue glow. I have a feeling that very few people get to see this with their own eyes, and especially not these days due to security concerns.

We were told to wear only natural fibers, of course one kid in my group forgot and set off the detectors before we left so we all had to hang out in a room with him while they sat him in front of a fan for 10 minutes until he wasn't glowing anymore.

You saw Cherenkov Radiation even in the spent fuel cooling pond that you could see with the light on ??

Dominion power. local power company, has gone to casks. they put the rods in a cooling pool, that needs cooling water, less the water evaporates too fast. But after a few years move the roods to dry casks, out side behind the reactor dome.

Wish I had been able to see that. Would like to get a dry cask as heating source. Sadly the NRC thinks otherwise (which is good) The cask will remain physically hot for only a few decades. I worry what will happen after lights out. Will people find ways to refill the cooling pools and top off the reactor water.
CME takes about five days to reach earth. That is enough time to shut down the reactors and bring in spare fuel for the generators. To park a couple of 22,000 diesel tankers on site. It is not enough time for the core to cool below boiling temps. Trying to convert a nuclear power plant to steam power will is not an acceptable idea. Instead of running critical; use the steam to run circulating pumps and a couple of generators for SCADA, lights and control power.

Well I guess maybe I'm assuming that's what it was. The pool wasn't glowing like a light bulb but the water was definitely the most beautiful blue color. I seem to recall that they did shut the lights off long enough for us to see it, but honestly now that I'm thinking about it I can't say that for sure. I just remember it was really cool to be able to see that spent rod pool in general, I don't recall much else about the trip except for that part, walking around the core, and having to sit in front of the fan with the dumbass that wore polyester

Cherenkov Radiation is a light blue. You probably saw it. NRC will not let us get near it now. Massive security. You are lucky.
