Preparations for the Quiet Before The Storm

Not to get all doom and gloomy, but there’s a high probability that things may get real bad, before they get worse. We could be seeing grid down and societal collapse way before the two main events. I cannot express myself enough that the time to act is now. If you’re not already living full time, or very near to your retreats, I highly suggest you make plans to seek sanctuary somewhere rural and preferably within a safe zone. The time to sell everything and flee the cities is now, while you still can. Once multiple grids start failing and stay down for longer periods, moving then, will not only make you a refugee but also a target if you are weak. The strong and unprepared will quickly turn feral once all the local stores have been looted. There will be little if any rule of law as most law officers and military personnel, unless still under command, will most likely be with and protecting their families. I bet many officers already have similar plans in place for then the SHTF. Forming bonds and communities now, is very important as single lone farmhouses will become easier targets. I have stated in prior posts, that if you plan on going to someone’s retreat, to make sure you are proactive by storing food, goods, logistics and personal items there ahead of time so as not to become a burden to your hosts.

Transportation.

With fuel being either in short supply, rationed or non existent at all, it will make wonderful sense to have a mode of transportation to get you, your loved ones and as much gear as you can carry to your retreat, as quickly as possible before roads, laws and or criminals make your journey difficult to near impossible. Optimally, I’d choose Horses over Bicycles and then maybe Boats. How much water is in your area will determine whether or not you can move by any of these listed. Also depends on the waterways and if they are quagmires of debris cluttered around bridges, you’re not going to get very far if that’s the case. If you have access to higher ground before the flip happens and the floods inundate everything, then horses might be the best way to go. Keeping and maintaining horses before anything like that happens, can be very expensive having the alternative and much more common reliable transportation source I would seriously look at some type of bicycle. During the Vietnam war, the north Vietnamese used bicycles to carry supplies, arms, and ammunition over the Ho Chi Minh Trail. It was recorded that each person pushing a bicycle could carry anywhere from 350 to 450 pounds of extra gear. The main reason why I don’t put motorcycles, ATVs or side-by-side at the top of this list is because if you have a long way to go, your gas may only last you a little while and you may not be able to refill and then you are stuck walking at that point. Something else to consider is unless you’re on a motorcycle you may not be able to access certain terrain, or trails with something as wide as an ATV or side-by-side.

As a refugee, Even if you are strong, You must either make yourself look weak just like everyone else or you can become a target.

At all costs try to avoid going to FEMA camps, unless there is no other option.

Never show what you have to strangers

If at a compound appear strong so as to give appearances of being highly defendable. Marauders will move on to more easily conquered targets.

Never have scheduled change of guard/sentry duty. Outsiders looking inward to take what you have, will watch for routines and catch you when you’re off guard.

Physical barriers and Security Measures

Homemade Hesco Barriers

Planter boxes

Swales

Setting up defenses

Caltrops are often overlooked

Barbed wire

Concertina wire

After the floods recede and the snows all melt, we will have to contend with the dead and dying. It won’t just be people but pets, livestock and natures critters. Some still living predators that may survive could include anything from zoos, or gators and sharks in the water or bear and lions on land, those in my opinion, would be the main contenders. Having ways to defend you and your loved ones is paramount. Rampant disease like cholera and typhoid or dysentery would soon spread among survivors if not taken seriously. Having access to clean water and ways to filter it is paramount. I imagine the elites in their bunkers won’t come out (if they can) until after not only things have settled but also after timelines typical for certain temps and conditions to occur for the decay of so many corpses and the associated diseases that follow in the wake of extreme catastrophes to pass. They may make cursory patrols at first, or if having been somehow insulated and if initially needed, they might send out drones with technical data collectors for air quality, radiation, etc…

As an afterthought upon reading this as I posted this sometime ago elsewhere. It may not be a bad idea to invest heavily in fly paper and mosquito netting made for masks and other body parts. With the death, dying and the decay from an unburied dead and rotting world, you’re going to see a lot of nasty things come back in the form of viruses and diseases. Having a way to keep yourself safe from insects who are known carriers of various illnesses may prove wise.. you may want to even give serious consideration to looking into purchasing some CRN suits and gas masks from a couple of different companies like Mira safety or parcil safety. Both have multi governmental DOD Contracts. I can personally attest to the quality of Mira safety.

That’s a mighty nice route cellsr, you got there, buddy. Looking fine and dandy in North, Idaho!

I learned a valuable lesson this year which may have just saved my life.
I became friends with a guy who has a nice property, and we worked for the last few years developing it to become a grid-down resilient place where we would bring our families.

He is a very generous, friendly, and physically capable man who used to play competitive ice hockey and was a successful boxer. And you can tell that he's taken a lot of hits to the head. His memory isn't the best...

He is also emotionally unstable as it turns out (which is a text-book symptom of chronic brain injury). I had noticed it observing how he treated his brother and a few people he paid to do work on his property. How his demeanor would shift unpredictably from one week to the next, but I didn't really pay it too much attention.

And then out of the blue I get a text message from him telling me that he doesn't want anyone on his property this year. That he didn't want to talk about it, and that I was to come and collect anything of mine that was stored there.

I asked him if it was anything to do with me, and he said no, and that we were good.

There were a few spring cleanup things I needed to do after the snow melted. And I have thousands of dollars worth of garlic in the ground there. Each time I stopped by to address one of these things, he got more and more hostile. A completely different person that I knew.

I have since realized that although a community / tribe dramatically increases your likelihood of survival, it can very easily be the death of you.

Having an emotionally driven or irrational person in any position of power post SHTF is a recipe for disaster. And many of these people hide this fatal personality trait extremely well.

With this guy... I would almost guarantee that he would develop little emperor syndrome, and become increasingly paranoid / tyrannical as time went on. People in his kingdom would be trapped. And if actually faced with an external threat from a hostile group, he would come out guns blazing. Easy pickings for a calculating and capable leader.
