I’ve decided to start a thread here on items that most of us may either take for granted and or forget about and not think that some items may be a good idea so I was hoping that other people would chime in and list maybe some of the items that you have in your pantry, whether it’s medical, food or personal items that most may overlook. I’ve been doing this for a long time, so my larder is looking pretty good, but often times there are things I think about that I could use and although the world may fall apart tomorrow, and I’m looking pretty good, there are many things that I still yet often think about that ‘I could use this for that’, or ‘this would be a great solution to fix that’ kind of thing. Now, granted I’d rather not carry all of this in a bug out bag due to the added weight, but having them in your compound for later use, may prove advantageous.
There’s an item that probably most of you wouldn’t realize would have actual use in a society after the cataclysm. His first item for me would be something like;
1. Vicks vapo rub. I’m pretty certain it’s a petroleum based product and I don’t really like adding it to my skin, but in the event of you surviving and having to deal with all of the horrible things that are going to be blown around our surface and through the waves, as well as all of the decay of what was once alive. All event is going to smell absolutely horrendous. If you are wearing some type of even just a simple dusk or particular matter mask, then you could add some event to the outside to help you not have to smell of the death and decay around us.
2. Secondly, again going along the same lines as a petroleum base product, I would have an ample supply of Vaseline available. Again, because it is a petroleum based product I prefer not to use it on my skin, but it has many other uses as far as something that would allow you to slide one pipe within another, especially if it was a tight fit it would allow for a easier smoother connection. Also if you impregnate cotton balls or other materials with Vaseline, it makes for an excellent fire starter when using a flint and steel. The best way to do that is to melt some Vaseline and pour over cotton balls and then stuff all of those cotton balls in a little film canister like with the old cameras used to use to carry rolls of film around in.
3. Something I’ve been giving a strong consideration to is trying to figure out how I can find a large source of coal or Coke. Not the kind you drink. This would be a great source if I had decided to get into blacksmithing or I wanted to look into some type of smelting or refining metals. Granted there will be probably various types of metal laying all around the place, but they could be in the form of a large blob. If I was able to find a large source of coal and either have it delivered or go pick it up myself in my dump trailer than I could either dig a big hole somewhere in my compound and fill the hole with the charcoal or Coke. That way in the event of the catastrophic hurricane force wins that we might be facing at least they won’t be on top of the surface and get blown away. And it turned become dangerous projectiles. If I had no choice, but to store it on the surface, I would then try to surround it with blocks or some type of concrete or hyper Adobe structure. At least to shed the wind and keep it from again blowing away.
4. Sandbags. There’s a number of places you can order them online including Amazon, but I would always try to find them in bulk. You can get them in different colors as well to help blend into an environment in case you don’t want anybody to see what you’re doing. They come in white green and other colors. If you want to fill a sandbag the best way in my opinion, short of buying some kind of contraption would be too invert a highway caution cone cut off the tip and set that into sections of a extendable ladder and then turn that ladder horizontally and set it up on sawhorses. Then you shovel the sand in through the base of the highway caution cone, and down into the funnel into the sandbag.
5. I’m at same note I would consider things like purchasing in advance enough hyper Adobe bags that you could store and possibly make structures after the flip out of that would be considered safe above ground.
6. Rolls of barbed wire. Typically they can be picked up at your local feed and seed store or Farm related stores. Like tractor supply as an example. The metal may all eventually melt, but in the meantime, it’s always good to have extra Barbwire around in case there is a time when we have no power grid but we are still alive and the flip hasn’t come yet you want to be able to defend your compound and having extra rolls of Barbwire, not only for the perimeter, but for creating funnels to direct both game and marauders into traps or fields of fire.
7. Another item from the farm and feed store would be rolls or spools of galvanized electrical wire. I’m talking Bear exposed wire. It is not covered in any type of plastic or insulation. No if you have the ability to run electricity through the wire to keep your livestock in an area. You can also use it in a defensive way to keep the wildlife from predicting your livestock by putting a hot wire on the outside of the fence. The wire is also excellent for using to not only fix fences but to bind everything and anything together. It’s a great way to buy 1000 feet of thin wire that’s not very big. It won’t take up very much space it’s not too heavy but can go a long way for a lot of great uses.
8. The same goes for bailing twine. This is an item that typically brightly colored and used to tie hay bales. It two comes in 500 to 1000 foot rolls which don’t take up a lot of room are made out of polyester and pretty much last a long time. There are of great use for binding things together. And way cheaper than Paracord.
9. Another item from the farm and feed store would be some type of triple action wound treatment. This is typically used for horses and other livestock, but can also be used for humans. It’s basically the same ingredients as Polysporin or Neosporin. It’ll typically come in a four or 5 to 6 ounce tube and cost either less or the same amount as a tiny tube of Polysporin from the grocery store.
10. These farm and feed stores are a blessing to the prepper. A lot of times you can buy all kinds of items in bulk that the grocery store will only sell you in a small bottle for about the same amount of money. I would seriously consider other things like a gallon of rubbing alcohol, a gallon of mineral spirits, a gallon of hydrogen peroxide, and all these other items that could be used for medical purposes.
11. Vet wrap. Vet wrap is basically like an ace bandage that you can use to wrap around a wound or if you have a wound and you put gauze on it then you could wrap it with this vet wrap and self adhesive itself sticking so if you wrap it around a couple times it’ll stick to itself on your leg or arm wherever the injury is. You can buy little rolls of this or it comes in multi packs. The great thing it being similar to an ace bandage, but it comes in a multitude of different colors and you don’t need those little clip things to help hold it in place or to even tie it in or knot as I’ve stated it is self adhesive and self sticking.
As this thread continues, I will continue to add more things to the list. These are just a few things I came up with sitting here for an hour. If there’s anything that you can think about that may not be on most people‘s list, feel free to add to this list. I would definitely like to see the engagement of the community grow. Thank you.
