A place to put info on using water to perform work.
I'll start with the ram pump, which uses the water hammer effect to pump water uphill without any external energy source.
 
Here is a video showing how you can use water to compress air. And it has no moving parts:
 
If you combine the water hammer effect used in the ram pump, and apply it to the trompe, you can achieve a much higher level of air compression:
