Most people who die post SHTF (and who aren't on life critical medications) will shit themselves to death.
This can be avoided until permanent water treatment systems are built, by using chlorine.
Not bleach though, because it only has a shelf life of months and is a pain to stockpile because of that. And it's bulky.
A much better and cost effective way is to use pool shock. It's a shelf stable powder that lasts years, and you can mix bleach up whenever you need.
Better yet, you only need 1/2 a teaspoon in 4 gallons of water to sanitize it. The catch is, Chlorine takes time, and is light sensitive.
So this is how you sanitize water for drinking:
Collect your water and filter out the chunks and bits as best you can in a makeshift filter made from woven fabric or dried grass.
Dose the water with pool shock at the rate I just described, and then leave it overnight in a covered container.
